Science Fun facts 6

  • It is possible for a photon to have such a long wavelength that the uncertainty principle puts it outside the bounds of the universe.
  • Essentially all life on earth ultimately depends on photosynthesis for energy.
  • The basic photosynthesis reaction is H20 + CO2 + sunlight = Glucose + O2. the sunlight provides the energy for the reaction.
  • The core of the earth should be much colder than it is if one simply assumes it's been cooling since its formation. Radioactive elements deep within the earth decay, providing the heat to keep the core warm.
  • Tectonic plates are driven by massive convection currents in the mantle.
  • The sun is made of plasma, which is an energetic, conductive fluid. The result of all this plasma flowing around itself is uncountable numbers of magnetic fields, all twisting and writhing around one another.
  • Tidal forces can actually flex the surface of planets. The Earth's crust will bend a bit due to the gravity of the moon.
  • There is not enough energy on the earth to overcome its binding energy, meaning there is no conceivable technology that could 'destroy' the planet.
  • Fusion power is easily achievable, as in the case of a bomb. Making a sustained, containable reaction is hard.
  • As the earth revolves around the sun, it causes gravity waves, which radiate power. It has been calculated that 200W of power is produced in this way.
  • A binary black hole would probably produce enough power in the form of gravity waves to be a useful energy source, but harnessing it is another matter entirely.
  • Lorentz contraction is a term used to describe the phenomenon of objects shrinking as velocity increases.
