Science Fun Facts 1

  • While Sputnik was the first object to orbit the earth, the German V2 rockets were the first man made objects in space, depending on your definition of where space begins.
  • Some infinities are larger than others. For example, there are an infinite amount of points on a line, and an infinite amount of points in a plane, but clearly a plane has more points than a line.
  • Coal and diamonds are chemically identical. The difference is entirely structural.
  • Nickel has the highest binding energy of any atom. This means it is impossible to obtain excess energy by splitting a nickel atom (fission) or combining it with other atoms (fusion).
  • Nitrogen is one of the most reactive elements, but left to it's own devices it bonds to itself to form N2. This arrangement is very stable, rendering atmospheric nitrogen effectively inert.
  • Gas giants larger than Jupiter become more dense as mass increases, but do not become larger. Greater volume is only possible when mass approaches stellar levels.
  • Nickel is very heavy, so most of it sunk into the earth's core eons ago. Asteroids can contain a lot of nickel, so some rich nickel mines on the surface are actually impact craters.
  • Some asteroids are older than the earth.
  • Some specks of dust floating between the planets are actually older than the sun.
  • There are objects in the Kupier Belt and Scattered Disc that were not formed with the sun; it is believed they were drifting through the void and were captured by the sun's gravity.
